A Letter from the GAAE President

Denise Smith
Retired, Brenau University

Dear Colleagues,

My goodness! Where did summer go? For the first time in 16 years I took the entire summer off from teaching, and time flew by! Now the fall semester is underway (fall break!) and it is time to update those calendars. The next GAAE annual meeting is just around the corner and it promises to be a great time to re-assemble together.

So mark those calendars for February 4-5, 2022, at Villas by the Sea on Jekyll Island.

These lovely condo accommodations are on the north beach with the conference on site. Fun activities are scheduled downtown that same weekend for your free-time enjoyment. Our special room rates* are good for Thursday through Sunday, so we hope you will plan to stay through the weekend for that mid-winter break we all need. Check out their website at https://villasbythesearesort.com/?gclsrc=aw.ds.  Special rates for GAAE will open November 1 until January 4.

Our meeting agenda for this session will focus around two key topics – the new CPA evolution and curriculum and scholarly activities, especially research/publishing. To these ends, we will welcome Dr. Jan Taylor Morris, academic-in-residence with the AICPA and a keynote speaker about the new CPA exam and accounting curriculum recommendations; and a panel of distinguished area accounting employers to address the needs of employers in their new staff. We always appreciate the update on the state of the industry by Boyd Search, GSCPA Executive Director, and encourage you to incentivize your students to become student members of GSCPA, especially for the networking opportunities. To wrap up the meeting there will be a panel of your “published” colleagues to speak about academic research and publishing, followed by research interest group meetings. This will be a great opportunity to find collaborators in your research interest area.

The tentative overall agenda looks like this:

Friday:
12:00 – 1:30 pm – Box lunch – Dr. Jan Taylor Morris keynote
1:45 – 2:45           concurrent sessions (RFPs to be sent in October)
2:45 – 3:15          break with our sponsors
3:15 – 4:15          concurrent sessions
4:30 – 5:30          concurrent sessions
6:00 – 8:30          Dinner and Guest speaker Boyd Search, CEO GSCPA

Saturday:
6:00 am – 7:30 am TENTATIVE Beach fun walk fundraiser to support GSCPA Educational Foundation
8:00 – 9:30          Breakfast – panel of employers
9:30 – 9:50          Annual Business Meeting
10:00 – 11:00     Concurrent Sessions
11:15 – 12:15     Researcher Panel
12:15 – 1:15        Box Lunch
1:15 Annual Meeting Adjourned until 2023

The Requests for Proposals will be available in early November on the GAAE.org website, as well as the conference registration, hotel information, and Sponsor information.

Just a note about the other activity on Jekyll Island that weekend for your free time. The annual Jekyll Island Whiskey, Wine, and Wildlife event will be taking place in the Beach Village Feb. 3-6, so there will be time to catch some of the culinary & wine tastings of the area. For more information see   https://www.jekyllisland.com/event/whiskey-wine-wildlife-2/2022-02-03/

I look forward to seeing you all soon.
